An estimated 340,000 people resided in Hong Kong as a 'Foreign Domestic Helper' (FDH) in June 2022. Composed of Filipino, Indonesian, Thai, Sri Lankan, Nepalese and other nationals, this large community remains marginalised even with their significant contribution to Hong Kong's current socio-economic environment. Rampant cases of abuse (verbal and/or physical), discrimination, stereotyping and ignorance between the local community and the MDWs are made prominent through news outlets and social media. What are we [the local community] doing to inspire change and understanding so that we may foster a Hong Kong free from profiling and misunderstanding?

With extensive research and preparation done in anticipation of this community art project, I have studied the history of 'FDHs' in Hong Kong and how civic organisations such as the Mission for Migrant Workers (MFMW), the Asian Migrant Centre (AMC), and PathFinders have provided crucial legal, psychological and welfare services where the government of Hong Kong has failed to do so. 

How can a community art project aid in this contemporary concern? Creativity, culture and togetherness is exhibited to us each and every Sunday at these mass gatherings. This project will aim to nurture these existing values while bridging the gap in understanding between the local community and the Migrant Domestic Worker (MDW) community. With a vision to leave a positive impact on the way we see and interact with MDWs in Hong Kong, bi-weekly happenings will coincide with one-on-one or group interviews and discussions to learn more about the individuals within this large community.
